Indeed, it represents a radical break with the policies of its neighbouring EU-countries as well, at least when it comes to the subsidising of renewable energy. Countries like Germany and the UK are still fully committed to massive support for renewable energy, despite the economic crisis. The cabinet of liberal Prime Minister Mark Rutte (who said during the election campaign that “windmills turn on subsidies”) and Christian-Democrat Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Verhagen is much more sceptical of the blessings of “green” energy.
